At current rates, that's about 13 years of capacity in the Greater Lansing area. Realistically, the two currently-operating Granger landfills together reported having 23 million cubic yards of capacity and took in 1.8 million cubic yards of waste in fiscal year 2022. The Wood Street location is expected to fill up in 10 years, according to a January projection from state regulators. The two landfills are about 12 miles apart, both on the north side of Lansing. In the last few years, Granger has sent virtually all of its waste to the separate Wood Street landfill in Lansing, at the border of Clinton County. The Grand River Highway landfill in Watertown Charter Township is one of two landfills in the Greater Lansing area, both operated by Granger. "We are not asking for tomorrow, there would still be EGLE (Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy) permitting and county siting processes," said Charles Hauser, a consultant for Granger and member of the landfill committee. ![]() The county's Solid Waste Planning Committee is made of 14 people, including four from the waste industry, two from environmental interest groups, three representing the general public and several representatives of local governments, to address solid waste concerns for the region. ![]() Granger officials told a Clinton County landfill committee last week that it likely would need three to five years for the necessary permitting, approvals, engineering and construction. The company wants the county to change its solid waste management plan to allow new work on the closed landfill, the first step toward an expansion that could take several years. The Lansing-based company has taken initial steps to reclassify an old 60-acre landfill, which is on the same property as the currently-operating Grand River Highway landfill in southern Clinton County. Granger Waste Services is looking to build a new landfill in a familiar location, on top of one that was sealed up nearly four decades ago. ![]()
